Gender: FeminineUsages: Norman (Rouenneis)Meaning: Norman form of Matilda.https://nrm.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathilde_Ire_l%27Emperesse(Information from name #296994 originally submitted by user jurure)
The name Mathilde was relatively popular in the beginning of the 20th century, was pretty uncommon by the 1940's, and got super trendy in the late 80's. It reached its height in 1996.
This name is also used in the Netherlands and the Dutch pronunciation is mah:-TIL-du. [noted -ed]
Mathilde is also a German name. This was my great-grandmother's name who came to the U.S. from Germany, and it was pronounced the same way as Matilda. [noted -ed]
