Are we sure that Mayra is a Spanish variant of Myra, and not derived from the Arabic name Humayra? I ask because the Moors' influence in Spain and Spanish culture, right down to names, endures to this day.

In my opinion, Mayra is a lovely name. I love the sound; it's a beautiful, melodic name. I actually prefer this "Mayra" spelling to "Myra", because I can't stand the Myra Hindley associations. (I don't live in Britain but even people over here have heard of her.)

I think it's somewhat misleading to say that Mayra's usage is "English", since it was probably created in Latin America and seems to be in widespread use throughout the Spanish speaking countries of the Western hemisphere. [noted -ed]
