Meaning & History

From the verb 和む (nagomu) meaning "to be softened, calm down" (compare Nagomi).
It can also be suffixed with a kanji that can be (partially) read as mu, such as 夢 meaning "dream," 武 meaning "valour, bravery," 歩, from the verb 歩む (ayumu) meaning "to walk; to advance along, follow someone’s footsteps," or 睦 meaning "intimate, friendly, harmonious."
