From Japanese 棗 (natsume) meaning "jujube, date" or 夏 (natsu) meaning "summer" combined with 芽 (me) meaning "bud, sprout" or 目, 眼 (me) meaning "eye". Other combinations of kanji can form this name as well. A feminine fictional bearer is Saffron City Gym Leader Sabrina (known as Natsume in Japanese) in the Japanese version of the 'Pokémon' franchise. A masculine fictional bearer is Natsume from the manga and anime 'Natsume's Book of Friends' (夏目友人帳, Hepburn: Natsume Yūjin-chō).
