Meaning & History

Medieval French form of Orabilis.

In medieval French literature, this is the name of a character from the epic poem Prise d'Orange (12th century). She is the daughter of the Saracen king Desramé and the wife of king T(h)ibaut, who falls in love with the protagonist Guillaume. She converts to Christianity for him, after which she changes her name to Guibourc (see Guibourg). The two get married not long after.
