Coincides with the French verb for 'fart', péter. Not joking, if you don't believe it, google it.Edit: why are people down voting my comment? Just because you don't like a fact doesn't mean it's a lie. Go to google translate, put Peter into the French side and watch as it translates to "to fart".

The name is Greek and derives from ΠΕΤΡΑ = stone. Exists in contemporary Greek, too.
Peter is actually a Hebrew word, it means "to be the first to breach the womb", in other words, first-born.
It can also be associated with the verb which means "to solve, to resolve, to be a solution".
