Meaning & History

Probably derived from Greek φυλή (phylē) meaning "tribe, clan, race, people". However, compare Phyllis and also Greek φυλάσσω (phylassō) meaning "to keep watch, to guard". In Greek mythology, Phyleus was a son of king Augeas of Elis.
