Listen to the German pronunciation of Reiner here:

An alternative spelling is the French "Renier", pronounced REN-nee-ay in French and REN-neer in English. My understanding is that, with this spelling, it's a variation on "Renée".

I think "Reiner" and "René" (one é; "ée" is feminine) are of different origins, the former Germanic and the latter Latin, even though they may look similar in the French form.

Another meaning of the name Reiner is "pure one", from the adjective "rein" (pure) with the masculine ending "-er".

From Wagner's opera Parsifal, Act Three, Scene Two: Gesegnet sei, du Reiner, durch das Reine! (Be blessed, O thou pure one, through that which is pure!)
