Meaning & History

In the case of Japanese ski jumper Reruhi Shimizu (1993-), he was named after Austrian military officer Theodor Edler von Lerch, who introduced ski into Japan in the 1910s.
The kanji used for Shimizu's first name are 礼 (rai, rei, re) meaning "bow, ceremony, remuneration, salute, thanks," 留 (ryuu, ru, to.meru, to.maru, todo.meru, todo.maru, ruuburu) meaning "detain, fasten, halt, stop" and 飛 (hi, to.basu, -to.basu, to.bu) meaning "fly, scatter, skip (pages)."
