Ruy (pronounced ROOY) is not a short form of Rodrigo but the ancient medieval form. The most famous bearer is Ruy Diaz de Vivar, El Cid. [noted -ed]

In Spanish, this would be pronounced something like 'ROY', comparable to the Spanish word 'muy' meaning 'very'.
