In Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech (one of my favorite books), the main character is called Sal. (Actually, her full name is Salamanca, but everyone except her grandparents call her Sal.)

I like the name Sal on it's own (Though Salvatore is nice)
Sal on its own even as a nickname, sounds purely masculine

Even Sal as a nickname for sally or any other is male.
