Meaning & History

Georgian form of the Scythian personal name Sawarmag, which literally means "black hand". It is derived from Scythian syāva meaning "black" combined with Scythian arma meaning "hand" and the suffix -aka. Also compare modern Ossetian сау (sau) or (saw) meaning "black" and modern Ossetian арм (arm) meaning "hand". Those are significant, because the Ossetian language is a descendant of the Scythian language.

This name was borne by two kings of Iberia, who are each better known under the name Sauromaces. One lived in the 2nd century BC whilst the other lived in the 4th century AD.
