My almost-2-month-old niece was named Serenity Dawn. Which all together means 'peaceful sunset'. I absolutely loathe this name. I was trying to convince my sister against using it, but she's very stubborn. So now my little niece will have to put up with her awful name, as I did mine.
I like the sound of this name. The nickname Wren/Renny is cute for this name.

Try thinking of an important person. A senator. Named Serenity Smith. And try not to simultaneously snort derisively and cry.

I can refrain from that. Very easily.
The condescension in these comments baffles me. I don't understand the difficulty of imagining an adult with this name. It's not terrible at all! Is the like-sounding (and root-sharing) Serena looked at in a similar fashion? Because that has been used for ages! What about Felicity? Heck, throw Verity in too! And Charity! None of these are terrible, and all fit little girls and adults. (Although I agree that Chastity is awful, but that has nothing to do with how it sounds.)
Ugh, I really dislike this name. It's so tacky and will sound horrible on a grown woman. Just because something's cute on a little girl doesn't mean it'll fit her as she ages!
It's a hopelessly corny name, and it actually sounds a bit like a Harlequin novel character. I don't really like any of these names ending in -ity, like Charity, Felicity, and, the horror of all horrors, Chastity. This is certainly the best one out of those, but it's still very corny.
This name makes me think of adult diapers. What if this girl develops a psychotic, larger-than-life personality? And just imagine a public official with this name!
All I can think of when I hear this name is the movie Serenity, and River Tam beating everyone up. Not a very good association, especially for a name with a meaning like Serenity.

I would understand a hardcore Firefly/Joss Whedon fan naming their daughter this, but I wouldn't personally name my child this. But because of Firefly, I like this name (for a character or such), especially with the nickname "Ren".
I am sorry, but I cannot imagine this name on an actual person. Unlike other word names, such as Prudence, Temperence, or Verity, this name does not seem to have the "established for centuries" bearing behind it. This was once the name of one of my cats, but again, I cannot imagine it on a human. It seems kind of, well, cheesy.
As far as virtue names go, this one isn't too bad. It's quite pretty and feminine, and personally I don't think it would only fit well on a little girl. My main problem with it is its association with that one Seinfeld episode... I keep hearing the characters screaming, "Serenity now!" in my mind when I hear this name.

It's got a pretty sound, yes. But let's be honest: it's incredibly tacky, and what's the chance the girl will actually fit her name? How can you be sure she'll be calm and quiet and, well, serene? I go to school with a girl named Serenity, and she's a ghetto loud-mouth who often has to be sent out of the classroom. Even worse are the alternate spellings: Sereintiy, Serranitie, Sarynitee. You may as well call her Chasstedie (Chastity) or Philesitee (Felicity).
Honestly this name is absolutely beautiful. It means so much to me on so many levels. Perhaps because it makes me think of the moon (which is one of my very favourite things in life). And also somewhat because it makes me think of someone very important to me. I very much like its meaning, its appearance, and its sound. When working in tandem with solemnity there is quite a beautiful combination (which is also reminiscent of what I have already mentioned). Honestly, I've no idea why so many people seem to bash this name. Calling it tacky, lame, unfitting of adulthood, fitting of a stripper even (don't ask me), corny, unnatural, not right sounding, unfitting of public officials, fitting of a girl's toy pony, unfitting of aged individuals, and some people have even stated that they despise the name altogether. Why would anyone be so horrendously picky about it. Is it not a good thing to be able to just be happy about such a name, and not get frustrated over it? Is being so picky not an obstacle to happiness, overall? Think of the people who carry this name, and how they might feel about such terribly judgmental reactions. Why not let them enjoy the meaning of their name, and perhaps even, allow them to strive toward adhering to it. If your reactions toward this name are so absurdly volatile, I would advise you to have a bit more serenity yourself... I agree with what erb816 had to say. Does it truly matter, whether or not someone fills the meaning of their name when growing up? If so, there are plenty of other names which should also never be chosen because "you don't know that they will grow up to be that way." That shouldn't matter at all. And if anything, names are often analogous with self-fulfilling prophecies in that they certainly do contribute to influencing one's personality. But that aside, there should be nothing wrong with naming someone after words with meanings such as this. I honestly wish that the people launching such objections to it would just relax a bit. Going along with what I said before about having a bit more serenity themselves. I wrote this merely in full expression of my ideas, and meant not to offend anyone. If I have done so, I sincerely apologize.
