Popular name in Chile due to Sergio Livingstone, famous goalkeeper who played in the Chilean national team then went on to become a well-respected journalist and TV personality. My name is the French version (Serge), but my Spanish-speaking family uses Sergio for ease and comfort. One of those names that no matter where you travel, there's likely a local language version, and the locals are going to use that.
The PORTUGUESE form of Sergei or Sergey is Sérgio, not Sergio. [noted -ed]
In Italy Sergio was typical of the second quarter of the 20th century. It was the 2nd most popular name in Rome in 1926 (behind Mario), the 3rd in 1931 (behind Mario and Franco) and in 1936 (behind Franco and Mario), the 11th in 1941 and 1946.
