From Japanese 信 (shin) meaning "trust, faith", 太 (ta) meaning "thick, big" and 郎 (rou) meaning "son". Other kanji combinations are possible.

Famous bearers are Shintaro Ishihara, a Japanese politician and author who was Governor of Tokyo from 1999 to 2012 and Shintaro Yokota, a Japanese professional baseball outfielder for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.
