This only works in Italy. Outside of Italy this is clearly a girl's name.It was very popular for girls in France and Germany, for example.
I agree that the previous comment said this is only a masculine name in Italy and feminine elsewhere. To me, I've just considered Simone a unisex name recently. I like Simone on both genders, but prefer it to be used on men now and Simona on women.
