Simonetta was the name of Sandro Botticelli's model for "The Birth of Venus" and most of his mythological female figures and madonnas. She was reputed the most beautiful woman of her time (c. 1450). Her last name was Vespucci, and she was related to Amerigo Vespucci, after whom the continent of America is named.

In Italy Simonetta was typical of the 1950s (8th most popular name in Rome in 1956). It was an ephemeral fashion: in the 1960s and 1970s the variant Simona was preferred.

This is my mom's name. Her parents named her after Simonetta Vespucci - they had read about her being the inspiration for Botticelli's Birth of Venus painting which they saw in Florence. I think it's a beautiful name and it's much better than Simone. (My mother and her parents are Italian.)
