Latinized form of the Greek name Θεμιστοκλης (Themistokles), which meant "glory of the law" from θεμιστος (themistos) "of the law, of customs" and κλεος (kleos) "glory". This was the name of an Athenian statesman and general who was victorious over the Persians in the Battle of Salamis.
