Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek noun θεός (theos) meaning "god" combined with the Greek adjective γνητός (gnetos) meaning "born". The latter word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb γίγνομαι (gignomai) meaning "to come into being, to be born". Also compare the related names Theogenes and Theognis.
