Gender: Masculine Usage: Biblical Other Scripts: יִשְׁמָעֵאל (Ancient Hebrew) Pronounced: ISH-may-əl (English), ISH-mee-əl (English) [key] From the Hebrew name יִשְׁמָעֵאל (Yishma'el) meaning "God will hear". In the Old Testament this was the name of a son of Abraham. He is the traditional ancestor of the Arabs. This name was used by Herman Melville for the narrator in his novel 'Moby-Dick' (1851).
