Meaning & History

Roman praenomen (first name) which is either of Oscan or Sabine origin and is generally thought to be etymologically related to (or even derived from) either the Latin verb valere meaning "to be strong" (see Valerius) or the Latin verb volo meaning "to will, to want" as well as "to wish, to desire". However, it should be noted that there is at least one source that theorizes that the name is derived from the Latin adjective volucer meaning "winged, flying".

This name was sometimes also used as a cognomen, of which the Roman consul Marcus Valerius Volusus (died around 496 BC) is a good example.
