Derived from Old Tupi kûarasy "sun", itself derived from kó "this, these", ara "day" and sy “mother, origin” and thus meaning "the origin of this day". In Tupi mythology, Guaraci was the personification of the sun as well as the sun god. He was the deity responsible for the creation of living beings.
