Meaning & History

Form of YOCHANAN used by Oscar Wilde for John the Baptist in his play 'Salomé' (1891). Unlike most depictions of John the Baptist, Jokanaan is young and clean-shaven, with black hair, white skin and red lips. Salome requests to touch his hair, then his skin, then kiss his lips. When he refuses, she demands his head.
