Meaning & History
From a version of the Spanish word canibal
"cannibal", with -n
- and -l
- interchanged, found in Hakluyt's 'Voyages' (1599). Shakespeare created this name for the savage, deformed slave of Prospero
in his play 'The Tempest' (1611). It was given to one of Uranus' moons.
