Opinions on Stella? It used to seem very old-ladyish and stuffy to me -- in the same camp as Priscilla or Hester -- but it's growing on me. I like the meaning, and I sing a lot of Mediaeval/Renaissance music, and a lot of my favourite songs have "Stella" in them (referring in that case to "stella maris" or "star of the sea": the Virgin Mary).

I think it's a very strong-sounding name, but nice if that's your style. Kinda harsh-sounding, you know?

Anyway, I clicked the link because I recently got a new cat and we named her Piper Estelle "Stella" :)

Stella is nice, but I prefer Esther and Estella. Estelle is nice too but too plain imo.

I don't know about the beer connection..

But it does invariably make my Brando neuron fire.. the way he yells the name in A Streetcar Named Desire is totally unforgettable. I hear the name, I hear the yell.

It's a nice name anyway. I don't think it's too old-fashioned.

Stella is quite nice, but to avoid the beer connotations, I prefer Estella.

I love this one! A long time favourite! I usually use it as a nn for Estella, but I really love it no matter what. One of my favourite character's of all my scripts has Estella as the main character she's called everything(Estelle, Stella, Stelle), but she's usually Stella, because it's my favourite.

I really like it, tho personally I'd go for Estella nn Ella to remove the Stella Artois connection. I think it has a lovely sound & meaning, & I dont think of it as being old ladyish at all.

I don't care for Stella, but I don't think it's an "old-lady" name. In fact, I do not know anyone who is "older" with the name (or "young" for that matter). I do think of the play A Streetcar Named Desire, and on the TV show CSI: NY, the lead female detective is named Stella.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE it!!! It's one of my favourites (but in the Catalan form Estel·la). I think it's a really nice name for a baby, last summer I met a little girl, she might be 2 or 3, named Stella, and she was really sweet and lovely, with blonde hair and blue eyes.

I used to have the same opinion as it was my grandmothers name but now I absolutely love it. It is pretty and suits young and old i think.

My cousins have a cat named Stella. Her full name is Stella Our Cat, intended to sound like Stella Artois.
Aside from that, I think it's a really lovely name, not too common, but not unheard of either.
