Well, I'm no expert but I thought that in former times, Chinese given names always had two parts: One generation part and one individual part. And the surname/family name always first.
Like Mao Tse-Dung (I think Dung is the individual name) or Soong Mei-Ling (Mei is the individual name here). If I see Jia Xiang, I don't know if her family name is Jia, or if her given name is Jia-Xiang.
Of course, they may be called by just Dung or Mei in daily speach. Or Gege (big brother), Didi (younger brother), Jiejie (big sister), Meimei (little sister). Sometimes men also choose a new name/pseudonym if they became writers or politicians. Women stayed home.
If the Chinese name sounds good for your character depends on the meaning, which you have not given. For instance, I believe that Mu-Lan means "brave orchid".
