My daughter wsa going to be called Maia (it means MARIA in basque) but my husband convinced me to call her Naia instead (wanted/loved in the same language) and although I like the name she's got I much prefer Maia. You pronuance it as Maya.
The oxford dictionary of names explains that Maia was a roman goddess, daughter of Atlas. She was the mother by Jupiter of Mercury
