I'd never given it much thought until I met a guy named Rory, and actually, it does sort of feel that way. I do worry that it can sound childish when I try to picture a middle-aged Dr. Rory McGillicuddy or something, but it's not too bad. And I think it works as a NN for Gregory or Roderick, too, if that's a concern. Hugh is one of my favorite names, and I think Rory Hugh actually is a good combo. What you're calling abrupt I'll dub "clean simplicity" haha.
