I thought of it as "too old" and a bit plain and frumpy for a while, but have never met one and never associated it with anyone specific with it. Since seeing "Brokeback Mountain" (and reading the short story), I associate the name with that character, and though she wasn't the happiest of people, I like the name more for it. It still doesn't have the loveliest sound to my ear, but I'd be pleased as punch to meet a really little Alma one day. Also somewhat distorting my opinion of it is that I knew a little boy for a while named Alva, so I think of him, even though Alma isn't masculine at all. :b
