Hm... I like both meanings. I like the history of Matilda a little better, but both are good. So the only deciding factor is my superficial impression. I'd rather be Madeline. Sounds sharper somehow. Matilda is still a tiny tad staid, to me.

MatildaIt's got medieval goodness, and I like Tilda and Tilly. Madeline is okay, but the world definitely has far too many Maddies right now.

Uh, DEFINITELY Madeline.
Matilda is too frumpy old-woman sounding and it seems as if people only like it every other decade or so. Madeline stands the test of time.

That's a tough one, but I think Madeline has a slight edge. I like how soft and sophisticated Madeline is. Matilda still has a bit of a too-youthful edge for me... probably because of that movie.
