I think it definitely pretty but it's not as frilly as similar names like Isabella, Annabella or even Gabriella. It has a more regal sound to my ears and isn't nearly as popular as those other names. A nickname isn't strictly necessary and it would even make a lovely middle name.
If Bella, Belle, Ella, Elle and Ellie don't really interest you what about nicknames Ara, Ari or Ray?
