Help[Opinions] Valerie / Valére
Valerie may be worming its way into my long favorites list. I was surprised to see that it ranked in the US Top 200 in 2011; I hadn't expected it to be quite so popular. I prefer the "VAH-le-ree" pronunciation, though I don't object to VAL-er-ee or the French Valérie, which is quite lovely in its own right.
There's also the French masculine form of the name, Valére [Valere], which is completely new to me. I still need to process it, but I think I'll come out liking it.
Thoughts on either of these names?

I know a Valère who is about 7 and one who's probably in his 50s which makes the name very usable to me and I like it very much!
FWIW If you want to use the name then you need to know your diacritic is wrong, it should be a grave "è" accent instead of acute "é" so Valère instead of Valére, it's a lovely name, glad you like it!

Ah, I tend to default to the acute accent if I'm not paying attention. Thanks for the correction; I'm not planning on using it anytime soon, but I should know how to spell it correctly. And I agree that it's certainly versatile!

I used to like Valerie more than I do now. VAL-eree, rhyme gallery. I can't imagine saying it to rhyme taller-ee with a straight face. That'd be like saying gallery, "GAH-leh-ree." Funny. Of course, I am not a French speaker. Sure I would expect anyone with a French accent to say it like that. But it's not an English pronunciation, by any stretch, IMHO.
I'm not a fan of any of the masculine forms, but Valor (m) is a GP. Valére is a cool name - not the sort of name I'd add to a list of favorite baby names, but appealing.

Valère is quite uncommon, according to INSEE - at its peak it was given to 51 boys. I've never seen it before. Valéry was much more popular, with 333 boys being given it in 1970. I think I prefer Valéry.
