I love it with the British pronunciation SEH-sil, but not how I've heard it in the U.S., SEE-sil. I think it would be hard to pull off the British pronunciation where I live.

I prefer the feminine versions Cecily and Cecilia (my cat's name).

dog name

I did meet one human Cecil once (swim instructor), though he pronounced it SESS-ull. He was really nice and encouraging (and cute), so I guess if I were to picture it on a human, it'd be like that. But yeah, it's pretty much a dog name. lol I prefer the feminine Cecily / Cecilia, anyway.

Not going to lie, I don't understand this opinion in the slightest. Nothing about Cecil says 'dog name' to me. I've never met or heard of a dog named Cecil, and I'd be pretty surprised to do so. It feels, in fact, distinctly un-doggy to me.

Anyway, I like Cecil quite a bit.

Hi !!!

I've heard it only once: the protagonist in 'The Butler'.

This names suits him as I agree with Wordsmith that it is dignified.

But I strongly hate the meaning 'blind' for a given name.
