I think it can be used as both genders, but I tend to lead towards female usage.
It brought to mind the Boy Wonder/ Batman's side-kick for me. Also, in the novel The Corrections, there is a character named Robin who has a lesbian affair outside of marriage.
I'm undecided as to weather I like it or not.
