[Opinions] Matthew
Everyone in the family loves this name, and we do not have a Matthew in our family. But, we are aware of how popular/common this name is. What are your thoughts on using Matthew as a first name?

It just strikes me as terribly dull and overused. Sorry. :-/

I love it, but I'm biased since my gorgeous bf is a Matthew! It's a classic, strong, masculine name to me and it has a great meaning. If you really like it, then I wouldn't worry about how popular it is.

It's one of my favorites ever-and also my brother's name. :) Honestly, I don't think popularity matters much anyway but especially with boy names it's a nonissue. Boys don't like to stand out name-wise in my opinion-they like being one of the guys with a name that friends and people they know have. Matthew is so handsome and classic-great name!

I love Matthew. My 3 y/o is Matthew and we picked his name b/c it means 'gift of God', and he was our precious gift after a horrible 2nd trimester miscarriage.I have two other kids, and we are exposed to a LOT of children in school, preschool, moms club, church etc. We don't know of any other Matthew's...so yes, it's popular according to stats, but not in our area apparantly. My other son is Andrew, and we know a million other Andrew's.If you love the name...go for it!

Hi Amy! I think I've written this before but my name is also Amy, my brothers are Andrew and Matthew, my son is Andrew and my brother (Andrew) may have a baby Matthew soon! :) I guess you can tell that my family loves these names also! :)

I love it. If I hadn't married a Matthew, my first son would have been named Matthew. But I don't like Juniors, so we'll be using it as a middle name instead. A co-worker of dh's recently had a son who is named Matthew and it's just so cute. Popularity doesn't matter to me as long as I love the name, so that isn't an issue with me.~Erin Lee, wife of Matthew James, mama to Sarah Patrice~

This strikes me as a 'common' name even though it's not actually that common! I think 20 years ago or so it was a lot more popular, I don't know many little boys with this name.

To me the name is so common I couldn't imagine possibly using it. We don't have any Matthews in our family either, but I'd be willing to say that I have personally known over 50+ Matthew/Matts during my life. Choosing a name, something that is intended to uniquely identify my child, when I have known that many other people with the name... it's just out of the question. People interact with more than family members afterall. Having classmates, friends, coworkers, neighbors etc with the same name is also a problem. The last name the child would have is also important. If it's a rare last name, a common first name is less of a problem. If the last name is at all common, strive to find something a little more rare as a fn or at least pick an unusual middle name. Confusion with medical records, utility accounts, credit cards, bank accounts etc DOES happen. (My first name is Jennifer and my last name is not uncommon. I have had issues like these.)What's the purpose of a name? If confusion arrises because multiple people have the same one does that mean it fails it's primary purpose? Imo, yes.
