Dmitrii is almost 40, and he feels old. Unfortunately, this leads to him allowing a man claiming to know the secret of eternal life into the house. He and Nikolena wake up to Anastasia coming into their room in a panic. The stranger had stolen a valuable icon she had received from her birth father, the tsar. This object proved Anastasia to be the royal bastard, and she is terrifeid the stranger is going to take her away from the Voronovs and to her birth father. They reassure her, but she has lost her hobby of daydreaming.

Pelagiia isn't sure if she wants to continue studying painting in Moscow, lest she miss another important family event. However, when she had previously been there, a painting of hers had been entered in a competition sponsored by none other than Anastasia's birth father, the tsar. She finds out that it has won! The painting will be hung in the Kremlin. The whole family goes to Moscow, though Anastasia is worried about being found. Luckily, when Pelagiia is presented with a monetary prize personally by the tsar, he does not recognize his illegitimate daughter. Ludmila is thrilled to buy many new books, and Dmitrii and Georgii perform music (to Nikolena's chagrin) and make even more money. The family buys a larger house.

Sadly, Koshka is eaten by a bear. Serafima and Evfrosiniia are devastated. Feodosiia begins to share Ludmila's interest in reading. Ludmila herself has a major change occur in her life. She meets a handsome young man, Leonid Ippolitovich Kobelev, and falls in love with him. She asks to get married. Her parents worry that she is too young and that he, training to be an actor, cannot support a family, but when she becomes pregnant they are forced to relent. Her hasty marriage and giving birth to identical twins only two months after the wedding causes talk in the village, but she and Leonid are happy as she feels she has fallen into a romantic story. Having grandchildren makes Dmitrii and Nikolena feel old, but Nikolena thinks that the birth of identical twins is a good omen for the future.
