One of my favorite classic boy names. I think the nicknames are avoidable. I knew a Nicholas and no one I knew shortened it to anything else, but that might have been because he didn't attend the school long enough to earn a nickname. I like Nikolai but it doesn't make sense for me to use it. I prefer Nicholas anyway. I hate that it sounds like "nickel-less" though.
