Help[Opinions] Peter and August
This name as slowly, but steadily crept up my favorites list to tie with Jonas. It's very sweet, and he'd have a cool namesake.
However, I have two problems with the name. Three, actually. They are:
1)My sister dated someone named Peter for several years, and they had a rocky relationship. He became a big part of our family...but also ended up stalking up. I'm wondering if the name could still be used - as the relationship will have been over for nearly ten years by the time I'd have a child.
2) The fact that in some areas it's slang for penis. It's not here, but I've heard the comment quite often. I don't want to end up with the equivalent of Dick.
3) The fact that peter is a word, and one that I actually use.

Yes, I do think of the word and I think I've mentioned that here before...August Jones sounds like Reverend Jones. The August Jones, rather that the normal one. It's a lot to live up to.
Although that could just be on paper- out loud, I would probably pronounce the name like the month (OG-ust) rather than the adjective (uh-GUST). That's not pronounciation, it's emphasis, and they're darn close. I think I'm obsessing now- sorry!
With that history I'd probably stay away from Peter. Petra, Petronel I like!

I have a son named Peter, so of course I like it, and so does he. As a small child he was saddened during Easter week because of (Saint)Peter's betrayal of Jesus, but it always came right in the end. His middle name is James, my Grandfather's name.

I love both names, even though I think of the month not the word for August. But then I remember that the month was named after the name, which was from the word, so it all goes back to the same place really. Plus, I have a nice ancestor named August, so I'm likely to use it as a mn.
I love Peter, and have never heard of it being slang for a penis. It doesn't sound like that'd be an issue where you live either. Plus, people will get used to using Peter as a name, and even if there is that association, it will fade for those who know him. My FIL is named Dick, and I've gotten used to it, even though when I first met him, I could barely say his name because I'd get embarrassed! But it doesn't bother me anymore. I don't think peter as a word is a problem, because I don't see it as a problem for August. The main problem I see is that your family has had a bad experience with a Peter, however a ten year absence may not make that important when you have a child. You'll have to wait and see.

I like both Peter and August. I think Augustin Peter sounds nice paired up.

I love Peter and I love Augustin. August is great too, and I don't really see any problems with either, except that August is a month which can be a pain sometimes (one of my best friend's is named April and it can get confusing). Peter isn't associated with penis at all, around here at least. I've never heard of that.

I like Peter but I wouldn't use it just because of the penis problem (lol). :-/ I don't think anyone is 'cruel' for using it, though, by any means. As for your sister's ex, just another reason I might not use it if I were in your shoes. But if you're in love with it, I wouldn't necessarily let any of these reasons sway you.

My dictionary says that august means dignified and splendid: full of solemn splendor and dignity (formal).
Personally I love August for a girl.
I love Peter but you should think carefully in case your family ends up always relating Peter to your sister's ex. As for the slang assoisation well that is enough to put you off the name.

Peter is not my type of name at all, but I think you could use it. People have come up with far more common slang terms for penis and I don't think penis is really something people associate with Peter, at least not around here. As for your sister and her ex, I think a decade has been more than enough time. Go for it, when the time comes.
As for August, I love it. Some might argue that it's a month and not a name, but of course that isn't so. It's both, and that's peachy. Both the shortened August as well as the month came from Augustus, which is of course a name. But you meant the word. To be honest, I don't think too many people would realize it's a word-other than the name of the month. I think August is safe to use too.

I love August, it's great. I really hate Peter. All I can think of is a penis, Peter Brady and Peter Pan.

Your sister and the rest of the family would know without asking that you weren't naming a son after her Peter, so I wouldn't worry too awfully much about that. Unless she is still so sensitive over the past relationship that his very name gets her upset.

Peter - a name I love. I have never heard it as slang for penis, and dont think I have ever heard anyone use it in every-day speech (but then again, if I did use it in speech a lot, I probably wouldnt consider it). As far as your sister's ex, I think that it could still be used since so much time has gone by. If you do decide to use it in the future, I'd mention the name (not the guy from the past) and see what reactions are. If you're pregnant, mention "Peter is a nice name" and if they remember the ex right away, its probably a good idea to stay away.

Lol, I've only ever heard it in one context. Because he works in the public sector, my dad jokingly calls himself "an august public servant" in a deep booming voice. He has a ridiculously large vocabulary ... I don't think it's used much at all.

Me, too. Maybe I've just skipped over or not noticed the word. Who knows! Or maybe I'm having a senior moment right now. Anyway, I'm sure to remember the word from now on.

I love August! I pronounce the month and the name the same and I don't see why anyone wouldn't. What is the difference?
Peter is NMSAA. I think it's boring, over-used and unappealing, to say the least. As for you using it, I don't think you should. At first glance, number 1 sounded like a very good reason not to use it, but when I read the last bit, I thought it was fine. However, number 2 is a definate, solid reason not to use that name. I've actually never heard of it but, if it's popular slang, don't do it. I had a teacher named Dick and it was a popular topic among students behind his back.

I have the same reservations about Peter (well, numbers 2 and 3, anyway). I love the name, though. In your case, I think number 1 is a big one. I don't know if the family could get over that.
I do think of the month August when I see and hear the name August. It's not a favorite of mine, I prefer Augustus.
