I had never considered that name, I only knew it from National Velvet, but thinking about it now I really like it! Maybe an alternative to Scarlett which is getting too popular.

I think both sound stripper-ish, especially velvet. Velvet also makes me think of Velveeta cheese.

thing is Velvet almost sounds like a stripper name or something

Both are nice and no, I don't think Ivy is popular at all. As for the whole poison ivy thing, well I think that can be got over easily.

Ivy is cute, I'm not a fan of it but I do understand the appeal. The popularity has been on the rise, it was number 301 in the US last year.Velvet has always seemed to hold sexual undertones in my mind.

Velvet sounds a little like a Stripper-name. Ivy is ok, but not really my style. I'm not a fan of Violet, but I do like Viola.

My sister in laws names!I have a sister in law named Velvet and a a sister in law named Ivy (who's husband is named Israel). I really like both names.
Velvet is very uncommon, but it suits her really well. Her full name is Velvet Veronica Abigail. It is softer sounding than Violet I think. I have never met another person with either name, although I've met an Ivory. I think they are both really nice names.
