Lucifer
I wish this name didn't have such an ugly connotation. It is rather nice sounding, and also has a beautiful meaning. What a deceiving name!Anyone else feel this way? Also, do any names deceive you? For example; they sound nice but have an awful meaning, like IMO Claudia or Orchid. Or they both sound nice and have a good meaning but have bad history or associations, like Adolf or Lucifer.

Isn't Lucifer grand? Such great aesthetics, and I even like the story. But of course, since religion plays such a huge role in a lot of peoples' lives, it's kind of out of the question.I don't generally care about meanings, but associations definitely matter; it's a shame about Adolf, too. Some aren't so bad, though; for example, I think Lilith's story is pretty cool.

I love Severus...that's what I want to name a boy...but it means severe. Also, a lot of people don't like the association of Snape...I do.
Speaking of Snape...
Snape, Snape, Severus Snape...

I love Claudia and Cecilia's meanings. I think they give them power.I wish Hitler's name had been something else. I wish it had been Joachim. Much lamer name. Or Dominik! Or Michel! These are all names I wouldn't mind seeing "retired."

Yes. Lucifer, Judas, and Azrael / Azriel are like that for me. Though I wouldn't hesitate to use Azrael anyway. Lucifer and Judas would take some more thought.

There's actually a Saint LuciferLucifer or Lucifer Calaritanus (Italian: San Lucifero) (d. 370 or 371) was a bishop of Cagliari in Sardinia and Christian saint known for his passionate opposition to Arianism.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Lucifer

I agree about Lucifer, it is a lovely name and too bad for the connotation! One name that I LOVE is Denethor, and I think Denny is a rockin' nn! I think it could be usable, but for those who know LOTR, Denethor was pretty much insane. But I love that character anyway!

Lucifer used to be one of my favourites. I think it's absolutely beautiful. Obviously, though, I'd never use it.I feel the same way about Orchid. I think it would make a great name if it didn't mean what it did.Claudia doesn't actually have that bad of a meaning. There's nothing inherently bad about feebleness and/or immobility.I wish Narcissa and Narcissus had better meanings. I think they're so incredibly gorgeous. Sigh.Ulysses possibly means "to hate", which obviously is a terrible meaning, but I get past it easily because A) it's only a possible meaning and B) it has incredible associations.I would say that Algernon is deceptive, but I happen to think that "having a moustache" is by far the coolest meaning any name could ever have EVER.

You're rightAlgernon does have the coolest name meaning evarrr.I like Ulysses, too. But you're right, the associations make up for any possible negative meanings. (Though personally, "to hate" seems kind of cool to me. Rather INTENSEooooh.)

LOL"Having a moustache" is an awesome meaning!
Also, what does Orchid mean? I think it's a beautiful name, but is the meaning really that bad?

why?

because the flowers that were named for it, part of their shape looks like testicles so they say, but IMO they don't.from wikipedia.org:
"Orchis is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). This genus gets its name from the Greek όρχις orchis, meaning "testicle", from the appearance of the paired subterranean tuberoids"Orchid is also a color though, and doesn't have anything to do with the flowers.

Yeah, but purple has rather sexual connotations if you ask me, doesn't it? And orchid is purple.
