There's a character in the TV series 'Skins' (which I love) whose name is Elizabeth nn Effy. I've no idea how that nickname came to be, though.

Really? I've never heard of the show but I'll tell her about it. I thought it was unknown of. Hmm so does that mean it really is a short form of Elizabeth?

I guess it does. My theory on its origin is that someone took Ethy/Ethie and replaced the -th with -ff for easier pronunciation, but this is really only a very wild guess.
