I like Marius because it is a male form of the name Mary, which is a very important name for me, but I do consider it an iminently genteel, thoughtful, gentle and poetic name - definitely an artistic Eurpoean name. I rather do picture a pretty young man in a velvet coat and hat, now that you mention it. What a dandy of a name.

Maurice makes me think of a wild-haired, bespectacled, sooty-faced mad scientist of the 19th century, with a large moustache. Fabulous.
