Esther
I never really liked this but last night I watched Dexter for the first time and the daughter of his girlfriend was named Esther and I kind of liked to see it on a young girl. It has a nice meaning, too.I really like Estella as well, but lately I find it a bit too frilly and have warmed up to Esther and Estelle a little bit instead. I still have the Bonnie and Clyde association with Estelle, though and it isn't a good one. She was a super annoying character. I can't even remember whether it was the character's or actress' name, but it makes me think of her even though I know a totally different real life Estelle.Stella is getting way too common which worries me a bit because it's close to Estella.Do you think Esther will make a comeback? You know anyone named this?

I have a gorgeous niece named Esther who will be turning 3 in August. Had the name not already been used, then it would have been a serious contender for a future DD. I love the Biblical connection and story, I love the meaning as I'm very fond of gazing up at the stars and I just think it's very sweet. I've heard of a few little girls with the name actually, but I doubt it will get popular. Estelle is also lovely and a great alternative to the popular Stella and the not as pretty Estella.

I think Esther has a lot of revival appeal. It's very similar to Astrid, which is experiencing a boost in popularity. And Esther has all the earmarks of becoming a hipster favourite. I'm actually surprised it's not caught on more with the Biblical namers. I suppose it's a bit too soft and wooly for the kinds of names they like. I find it quite pretty and I wouldn't be at all surprised if we saw Esther rise up a few notches in the charts.

I met a little Esther once that made me love the name. Seeing it on a three year old energized it for me. But I have to admit that my heart belongs to Hester. Hester has a zippier, funner vibe for me than Esther.

Actually her name is Astor. (I watch this show religiously and am waiting on the edge of my seat for the next season to start)
One of my favorite movies is Orphan where the creepy kids name is Esther, but that
movie actually made me kind of like it. And its sooo NMS!
An old lady who I used to go to church with was named Esther

Oh really? Then the German guy who dubbed his voice did a horrible job :P I watched it in German and he pronounced it like Esther. Still Astor is really cool! I didn't know it was a boys name it makes me think of Margaret Astor (is that her name?), Brooke Astor and make up of some reason.

make-upYou might be thinking of make up because of Estee Lauder? Estee is a diminutive of Esther.

No, there's a Margaret Astor make up brand. I just found out but must have remembered it from somewhere :P Estee is a pretty nice name, though :)

AstorPerhaps Astor is making you think of Max Factor (if that's even still in existance.)

I googled itand there is a Margaret Astor make up brand. I don't own any of their make up but remembered the name. That's why it seems so feminine. I actually rather like it now, I think I will open a new thread :P

I can currently only associate the name with the creepy girl from the movie Orphan, lol....never seen it on a real person. Before I saw the girl being creepy in the movie, though, it did seem like a cute name on her, but she acted and dressed really old-fashioned, so I also see it as an old name.

I didn't think much of Esther either until I met a fifteen year old girl with that name. Now I'm warming up to it! She used Esti as a nickname. I think Esther could make a resurgence, though it'll be slow and it probably won't jump into the top 100 for at least a while.

I like Esther, but I prefer Estella. Since I've yet to meet a Stella IRL, the NN doesn't bother me.

I like Esther. I think a lot of people consider it to be a bit of an "old lady" name, but the only Esther I've met is younger than me (about 18/19) so it definitely does work on young people. I would love to see a little girl called Esther.I definitely prefer Esther to Estelle (makes me think of the agent in Friends!) or Estella, which is too frilly for me!

I'm really quite fond of Esther to be honest and I kind of think it's already on it's way to making a comeback. I hate Stella, Estelle etc but really quite like Esther.
