one more....Gloria?
Revisiting as this has always been a favorite of mine, but husband and mother/others have always found it tacky....what are others impressions? Does it differ from Katrina, (and if so, how) or does it have a similar vibe? Do they both shrink in comparison to Violet as a first name?
Replies
Gloria is retro, however, I like it. It's an oldie but a goodie; it's not tacky at all. It's my MIL's name and she goes by her mn which isn't nearly as nice, imo. Too bad. Impressions ... Gloria can be anything she wants to be. She can be fun and sassy and deep and introspective. I see her as a little more grounded than Katrina. The vibe is completely different to me (not that Katrina is fluffy at all). I think of youthfulness and maturity with Gloria while I picture Katrina as more youthful and innocent. In comparison to Violet, Violet seems very now (perhaps because it has only been on my radar in the last five years or so) while the other two are more established and genuine. Picture two gemstones of fine quality and compare them to a beautifully crafted man-made creation. Overall, I prefer Katrina and Gloria to Violet.
Hope this made sense so early in the AM. ;-)

I like Gloria, worked with a very charming one, and would love to see it on a little girl. It doesn't strike me as in the least like Katrina.
I prefer both of those to Violet, which reminds me of violent when looked at.
Gloria Violet would be pretty, though.

Gloria is a lot to live up to. Katrina is both spunky and modest! And Violet, with its short forms of Letty or Vi, and its association with, yeah, a shrinking violet, just doesn't please me at all.
Katrina Violet could work well as a combo, though!

I like Gloria, actually. I think it differs in style from Katrina, just a different vibe entirely- like whereas Gloria has sort of a retro clunky funky vibe, Katrina has a real 70's/80's feel to it. I'm not sure it's out enough to be in again, kwim? I do love Violet, though it's getting a little stale. I think it's a better fit with Gloria than Katrina by a long shot though, and I actually think Gloria as a sister to Violet is pretty adorable...makes Violet more interesting somehow. As a side note, I think Glory is pretty darn cute too.
Me too, I love Glory AND Gloria. I think my older sister, who is 48, had the same feeling about Katrina when I mentioned it-that it was very 80s/big hair, she definitely has those associations, which will remain as strong as the hurricane association for some. I also agree that Katrina Violet seems a bit disjointed in style/era in comparison to Gloria Violet (though that could work if a child were ever unhappy with Katrina and wanted a more traditional option). Though Violet and Katrina both have the harsher (and intriguing) T.

I love Gloria and don't find it tacky at all. I think of it as retro and unexpected. It also brings to mind the colors purple and blue, most likely because of morning glories.
I think it does have a different vibe from Katrina. I think of Katrina as sharp and outgoing and loud, and Gloria as more subtle, with more depth. As far as Violet goes, it's lovely (obviously I chose it as my username for a reason) but lately I prefer Gloria to Violet, and either of those to Katrina.

I agree on the different vibe, though somehow I am picking up the vibe of Katrina from my DD and have been since she was born. And she doesn't seem sharp at all, rather round and soft, like all babies (she fits her current name OK, I just don't care for it much). I share with you that Gloria differs in vibe, warmer, and from a different era. Katrina seems slightly more child through teeny-bopperish/more youthful to me, while others seem to find it colder and more austere (perhaps teenager and cold are synonymous though!).
I love Gloria! I has always seemed very warm and sunny to me - probably because it makes me think of morning glorys and subsequently warm sunny mornings :) Katrina is very cold and sharp sounding to me and I tend to picture it on a "valley girl" type of character. Gloria is much softer... sort of sweet and foggy. And I'm not of a fan of Violet so I'd pick Gloria over the other two any day of the week
I'm almost getting tired of Violet. That's not to say that I'm advising you not to use it. Far from it. I'd be delighted to be introduced to a little Violet or Katrina. But I'd run out and buy a lottery ticket if I were introduced to a little Gloria. That would absolutely make my day.
Gloria Siobhan is my stock combination. :-) Are you looking into mns yet, or still trying to find the perfect fn?

No...she's already got both the first and the middle...violet is a distant family name and I'd like to keep it in the middle. I'be been given the license to call her whatever I want as long as I don't change it legally. Went back to my old list and found Gloria...which has always been vetoed. I'm looking for a name I want to call her that works for me, her, andIRL. lt would be my pet name but I want it to be something that works Right now I am entertaining this, Katrina, or Violet
Ah. Then by all means, Gloria.
Violet is sweet and five years ago I would never have thought it would catch on. But thanks to a celebrity or two it's doing very well in the charts. Which is good. It's just that Gloria is so much more unique now. Katrina is nice too. I'm just really feeling Gloria at the moment.

Me too....Rosalie is already cemented in everyone's head-including mine-but still not loving it all the time. So I've been given the OK to call her anything unofficially, and I want it to be something I love that's practical too in the event that it catches on.
I think it's a great name, very pretty & nice sound.
Love it!
I honestly don't see what's tacky about it- I think it's lovely.
