Uhmmmm in my accent it's definitely the short 'a' as in Mack. The 'a' in Mack isn't even that short when I think about it. But the first syllable sounds like MACK. Mack is also a common nickname for Mackenzie. Argh I don't know how to explain it, I just connect the first and second syllable. I understand what you mean, it's just a slight difference anyway, so I guess it has something to do with our accents :)
