An interesting ancestor set
I read a book (The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane) and I found the ancestor set of mother/daughter really interesting:Deliverance had Mercy
Mercy had Prudence
Prudence had Patience
Patience had Temperance
Temperance had Sophia (Greek for Wisdom)
Sophia had Grace
Grace had ConstanceI love how the author kept the theme while updating it for the time period. And for some reason I am really digging Deliverance.

That is the most interesting theme I've seen in a long time.

That is really cool actually.

That's exactly what my husband said.Obviously, I'd never use it but it's still a cool idea.

I really like Patience, Prudence, Constance, and Grace is kinda growing on me sorta almost kinda.Patience is my fave. It reminds me of morning glories. Like as soon as I see the name Patience I picture a pale lilac-and-white morning glory in my mind.I'm not sure if I'd ever use Patience though, because I feel like I'd be telling any daughter named Patience to sit and wait and endure whatever comes instead of going out and getting what she wants in life, but I wouldn't assume that's the message other Patience's parents are trying to bestow on their daughters, I think that's just my own problem, because that's what I was taught so I have issues okay.

It is kind of a dangerous message, isn't it? Patience is great for getting things done, but if you take it earnestly it can be a life-ruiner. I'm glad you're fighting it.It's pale lilac for me too. Looks more like actual Lilacs than morning glories, though.

I like Prudence, Constance & Mercy. Deliverance is interesting - it would be really fun to come across on an ancestor! - but it makes me think of postmen.

I read that too! I liked the book a lot.
Name-wise I think Deliverance rather stands out, I had heard of all names before except Deliverance, but I must say that I like the sound, the meaning.. idk, I'm not terribly religious, so it's a little over the top for me.
I really like Mercy.

Deliverance? I see the attraction of Puritan names in general. But Deliverance has taken on a completely different meaning recently. Have you ever seen the infamous, 1972 movie "Deliverance?" To this day, it's a euphemism for backwoods ignorance / cruelty. (I'm not saying people in the country are anything like this movie. It's just the popular go-to term for a certain stereo-type.) So Deliverance is out for me. Temperance reminds me of Carrie A. Nation and her "successful" temperance movement that brought about Prohibition in the U.S in the 1920s. Crime and bootleggers. No thanks. But the rest are pretty neat. I especially love Mercy, Prudence and Patience. Constance is an overlooked gem that could easily make a comeback. Normally I would be all over Sophia as a name for a kid in real life. But here I kind of wish Sophia had been Wisdom instead. :-/

I know it's not usablebut I still think it's a cool idea.I think the author did well to have a Sophia instead of Wisdom - it makes the book more realistic. You need to read the book to understand - Wisdom wouldn't have worked.

When was the Deliverance in the book supposed to have lived? Deliverance didn't have the connotation it does now before the novel "Deliverance" was published. I wouldn't think anything of reading an historical novel with a character named Deliverance, for that reason.

Funny. I think that the temperance movement was incredibly stupid, that Prohibition must have really sucked, I'm really glad that it didn't last, and I really like a drink or two. But I still love Temperance and the nickname Tempe. I guess that I'm successful in giving a broader meaning to the word "temperance". But now that I think of it, given that I feel the way that I do, Temperance is a name that I should probably never consider really using. Like Faith.I really like Mercy (even though my daughter knew a bitchy Mercy) and Patience, also, but hate Prudence.

I have a hard time thinking of Mercy as a girls name. Having an uncle named Mercy really colors my opinion. Lol.

Wot? A bitchy Mercy? How is that possible? Didn't she see her name and know how to act accordingly? :-P

I actually kind of feel like with any virtue name, the bearer is going to turn out to be the exact opposite. For example, Patience will be the most impatient person on the planet. Temperance is going to be quite immoderate. Verity will love to "weave stories." Chastity... well, too many raunchy jokes already exist, and I don't want to reprint them. And Mercy will be a little terror.
