Witch names!
I was browsing Wikipedia and decided to compile the most unusual names of people executed or accused of witchcraft/sorcery/necromancy. As you can imagine there are vastly more female names, but there are a couple cool male names. Most of the names date from the 16th-17th centuries when witch hysteria was sweeping Europe, but a couple are older or more modern. No names are from beyond the 19th century.Female:Polissena

Oooh.Polissena is cool, but Polyxena (which I think might be related) is much, much prettier.
Marketta is interesting, but not my taste.
Sidonia is pretty, but too close to Sydney / Sidney to get away with using today, I think.
Michée is fascinating!
Mercy totally strikes me as the kind of name a child vampire in a story would have. Oddly fitting (apart from, the, y'know, not -actually- being a vampire bit)
I love Temperance at the mo for some reason.
Afra is very pretty.
Zinevra is awesome! Love!
So is Aquilina. That's totally going on my list.
Lizl is so minimalist.
Ummel is adorably ugly.
Bertelme is interesting.
Am I the only one who loves Isambour? It's amazing!
Sigbrit is kind of charming. It would make a cute name for a cat, or something like that.
Sally Rainbow made me giggle. Not exactly the most menacing name.I like Mathurin a lot. Heliodorus is also cool. Urbaine just makes me think of 'urban' or 'urbane'.

Ask-Elin is brilliant, like a medieval village Helpful Hints specialist. And I feel really sad for Sally Rainbow - a less evil name I cannot imagine. Perhaps she used it for camouflage and was secretly a Heliodora Senton.

Ask-Elin means "Elin of the ash tree", it hasn't got anything to do with asking. ;)

What unusual names! Are they from all over Europe? I like Sidonie and Sidonia, Mercy, . I'm not sure I like them, but I'm intrigued by:
Christenze
Afra
Zinevra - Like Ginevra? Maybe someone trying to spell the name phonetically?
Itgen
Entjen
Henricus
Felder Bettlerbub Dionysus is ridiculous.

Feldner Bettlerbub Dionysus@ Kinga:I'm sorry if I overstep, but I just googled Feldner Bettlerbub Dionysus.
It was the "Bettlerbub" that made me suspicious because it literally means "beggar boy", so I thought it might have been his profession rather than his name.
Turns out it was ;)
Plus, he was from Salzburg, Austria, and "down south" people tended - and still sometimes do - to refer to you by your family name first and only then mention your given name. (So let's say your name is Johannes Müller. You'd then be referred to as Müller Johannes or even Müllers Johannes.)
That's what happened here.So long story short:
This guy's name was actually Dionysus Feldner and Bettlerbub (beggar boy) was his profession.
By the way, apparently he was only 12 when he died. And with him 39 others aged between 10 and 14. Sad.
Oops, wrong spot. Sorry.

Oh no, not overstepping at all! Thank you for chiming in! I got the names from scanning Wikipedia articles so I'm not surprised things got a bit muddled. I never even suspected Bettlerbub was a profession name!Yeah, the whole witch craze was full of horrible sad stories like that one. I read in one article that things got so bad in some places, several villages were left with only one or two female inhabitants after it was all over. Not even children, or even babies, were spared. One girl was tortured and killed simply because her father, a suspected sorcerer, had raped her. Another woman was burned alive despite being pregnant: they decided it was "the devil's child", because she had been married 14 years thus far without any children. So awful.

Yay! Witch names are fun! (though a sad history but infinitely interesting)I like:Gyde (pronounced like guide? Hm, kinda neat)
Sidonia/Sidonie: very witchy!
Nyzette
Mercy (especially as a child vampire--heh!)
Sigri
Zinevra: a spicier Ginevra
Beltrana: total witch name
Kael: interesting for the time period
Maroie: cool in theory but kind of sounds like a marble-mouth Mallory
Bertelme: oh, how silly!
Krystyna--okay, don't like this, but seems crazy modern.
Isambour
Ask-Elin is kinda cool
Inesa
Sally Rainbow?!! She sounds like a pothead. The male names are a trip. Especially Felder Bettlerbub Dionysus. That is just too much for words. How great!
