I don't find Hildegard and Ethel particularly ugly or comical, but Walburga is indeed more along those lines.
I think the Swedish form Valborg, which was popular here in the early 1900's, is rather nice however. But it probably looks just as funny as Walburga to the non-Swedes. :P
