I have never heard this name, and I like it at first glance... but it is very foreign to me. I have trouble saying it like a name and my brain wants to shorten it to Somer.

Sunny doesn't work for me, since it is an "m" in the name. You could use it anyway, since I have seen far more unrelated nicknames on children... but I think even Sonny would match better. I think Sonny (or Sunny) works on boys or girls.

As for the full Somerled, I think I would be impressed to meet a child with the name... but I know that child would not be mine.
