Just saw Interstellar and though the little girl's name is Murphy, I at first thought she was being referred to as "Mirth" instead of "Murph." And so it got me thinking about Mirth as a name. I find it quite pretty and the definition is neat. Wdyt?

Mirth: It sounds bad. "Hey, my name's MIRTH". Just, no.
Galena: Pretty, but not something I would use. I can't relate to it.
Imani: Sounds like a high fashion label/designer.
Shem: Wow.

Honestly, I think Murphy is the best name here. I grew up watching "Murphy Brown", so I don't mind it on a girl.

Mirth is indeed interesting. I hated it right away, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.
It's different, but in a Merry kind of way - so it technically works. Plus, it is quirky and not too weird. I would go for it... though I think I would prefer it on a boy.
As for your listed names:
Galena - I prefer Halina (which is both Filipino and Polish), and the spelling Galina. However, this name is uncommon, yet pretty. I like it. It rings old-fashioned, yet has a young feel to it (with the 'i' spelling). I liek both Gale and Lena as nicknames, so it works for me! I give it a 7/10 since it is pretty and unique, but loses points because I prefer other spellings and because pronunciation might pose an issue (gay-lena vs gah-lena). Still, def above neutral.
Imani - I actually have a close friend with this name. It is pretty, simple and the meaning is sweet. However, I will say that all the Imanis I know are rather stuck up and borderline arrogant (my friend included)... so I have a bias against the name as being pretentious. That said, you don't hear it often and I am sure there are sweet Imanis out there too. I give the name a 8/10 because it sounds nice and flows with almost any other name, but it loses two points for personal preferance and possible pretentiousness.
Shem - Love it! One of my favorite biblical names, mostly because it is simple. I do know a few (sorry!) dogs with this name though, so it loses some points for being so appropriate as a pet name. But, I rank it right in there with Abner, Meshach, Moses and Saul... retro-cool biblical. ;) I give it a 7/10 as totally usable, but a more off-the-wall choice that would only work for the right family.

I like Mirth. It has an ethereal quality to its sound. I think its very feminine.
I don't have much to say about the other names, except that Galena is a very poor village here in Alaska.

Mirth would be a cute middle name actually. Much more attractive than "Murph" in my opinion.

Imani isn't to my taste, it's pretty, but I have this weird desire to make it Inani or Imami so that it would be better balanced.
Shem is awesome. Especially from a name nerd perspective. A name that means name :) I like short names though.
Shyam is pretty nice as well, I knew on in middle school and I like the meaning. It's so similar to Shem though and isn't nearly so pleasing visually.

Shem sounds like one of the Three Stooges. Shyam isn't any better.
Imani is beautiful, but would seem a bit silly on a white girl, if only because it typically is not used on white girls.

Mirth is ridiculous. Like naming a kid Smirk. While I'm at it, Murphy is awful on a girl and even on a boy. Murph is even worse.

Except that I've not once heard mirth used in casual conversation, where I hear smirk all the time
